Mystical Poetry
"The body is a temple, the soul a sacred shrine, Divine love is the lamp, and ecstasy the wine." ~ Kavindra

"Poetry stretches language to its very limits - providing us with a glimpse of something beyond discourse, a taste of transcendence perhaps."
  ~Kavindra

In the tradition of Kalidas, Blake, Mirabai, Rumi, Shelly, Hafiz, Keats, Poe, Tagore and Gibran, and all the great and inspiring poets whose words touch our hearts and heal our souls, we are pleased to present the poems of Jeffrey Armstrong, also known as Kavindra.

Mystical poetry seeks to reproduce very subtle states of spiritual perception. In India, the Bhakti and Tantric schools of mystical poetry speak in a voice that longs for intimacy with the Divine Beloved. They attempt to reveal the emotions exchanged in the relationship between the soul and the Eternal Lover or Beloved God.

As an initiate of those ancient teachings, Kavindra embodies and is able to pass on the sublime fruits of those sacred traditions. This initiates the listener directly into the ecstatic emotional states of spiritual bliss. His poems are literally windows into the Divine realm that are revealed to him during profound states of meditation.

From the book entitled The Night We First Met
Written by Kavindra – Jeffrey Armstrong

I remember the night we first met,
You were a mighty Lord beyond my knowing,
For I was a common person with no understanding yet,
Seeing You from a distance, something in me started growing.

You had a supreme power over our lives,
So I sought to serve You in some way.
I was taken into the kitchen of Your wives,
Cooking sweet dishes for You every day.

Sometimes I even imagined You were a child,
And I nourished You from my heart,
Other times I dreamed fantasies so wild,
My strong emotions began to tear me apart.

Those around me saw my condition and knew,
And so in Your garden on a summer night,
Arranged for me to meet alone with You,
I remember Your eyes in the silver starlight.

You instructed me in the confidence of love,
And asked me to serve in Your private palace,
From my humble quarters I was taken above,
From a no one I was lifted up by Your grace.

In this way, You and I became friends,
Impossible but true, we sat for hours,
Discussing all manner of things, holding hands,
I forgot Your opulence, greatness and powers.

You became the companion of my soul,
The person with whom I shared every breath,
You gave me the vision to see things whole,
And taught me that love does not fear death.

Then came the time You traveled far away,
On a mission of state, on some great journey,
For me each moment seemed a day,
Each night an endless void filled with yearning.

At last I was taken by Your smiling maids,
Who placed me in a blooming garden bower,
Adorned me with jeweled silks and gold brocades,
And wove into my hair each fragrant flower.

A full Moon rose the hour we were wed,
With tears of joy my wondering eyes were wet,
And as You led me to our wedding bed,
I again remembered the night we first met.

“Your work is a direct transmission of transcendental energy...You are the new Rumi.”
Patrick Bernard
Award winning producer and composer of devotional music. Montreal, Canada

"As I read the poetic verses in The Night We First Met, I felt once again that joyful, blissful glimpse of divine love that I had first experienced many years ago in my life when I had read Gitanjali of Sri Rabindra Nath Tagore, who was awarded a Nobel prize in literaturefor his work. I am thrilled to see the depth of experience of Hindu divinity in the verses composed by a nava-Hindu, Sri Kavindra."

Ved Prakash Chaudhary, Ph.D.

General Secretary,
Hindu Collective Initiative (HCI) North America

“You have a God-given gift of words which makes the mystical easy to reach… Upanishadic phrases and beautifully imagery are woven seamlessly with modem symbols. Kavindra has done a service to the English speaking world by bringing out this volume.”

Abhinav Dwivedi
Vice President,
Hindu University of America, Orlando, Florida
